Shaun King and His Wife Accept Islam
Notable activist Shaun King, together with his spouse Rai King, just became a Muslims. During an Instagram Live session on March 11, 2024, the first day of Ramadan, the pair made their decision known to the public.
In the video, King repeated the Islamic creed, the Shahadah, under the guidance of his friend and scholar Imam Omar Suleiman. King expressed compassion for the Palestinian people's fortitude in the face of adversity and credited the current hardships in Gaza in part for his conversion.
Several factors seem to have culminated in King's conversion to Islam. King, a seasoned supporter of racial equality and social justice, might have connected with Islam's emphasis on these principles. His preexisting friendships within the Muslim community also probably contributed.
The conversion of the Kings has attracted a lot of attention. Some see it as a symbol of the growing relationship between Islam and social justice movements. King's strong support for Palestine might also have fresh meaning in light of his Islamic religion.
